2017 Event - September 16th & 17th
The Round Norfolk Relay is a team relay held usually over a weekend in September. The route runs the circumference of Norfolk covering 197 miles divided into 17 unequal stages. Starting at Lynnsport, Kings Lynn and then on to Hunstanton, the route follows the coastline through five multi terrain stages as far as Cromer. The next four stages from Cromer to Gt Yarmouth are run on the road. From Gt Yarmouth the course turns south-west following main roads for 67 miles (4 miles), all during the night. On reaching Feltwell, the last 3 stages are run across the flat Fens through day break. The final leg follows the Great Ouse River back into Kings Lynn, with a grand finish at the Lynnsport stadium.
We have entered at least one team in this for many years. The last few years, to guarantee our place we have marshalled the very last hand over point. Not only is the team made up of runners, but also of cyclists to accompany runners on the road sections and night time car support. It's a fantastic event, with some beautiful scenic routes and challenges of running long distances during the night. It's a logistical challenge of people doing car shuffles and cycling backwards and forwards to get the right people in the right place - a challenge that Striders love!
The first Round Norfolk Relay was first held in August 1987 originally organised by the newly formed Ryston Runners, in subsequent years other Norfolk running clubs joined in and in less than 5 years there were 11 teams. In the course of its history renowned International althetes have either competed or been guests: Tony Simmonds (1993), Tom Don (1995), Kelly Holmes (1996), Darren Dead (1997), Hilary Walker (1999), Richard Nerurkar (2000), Paul Evans (2003), Debbie Robinson (2003), Barbara Parker (2003), Ruth Senior (2008), Hollie Rowland (2009), and Ron Hill (2011)
Stowmarket Striders have been running the relay since 2005, with their fastest race so far in 2006 with an accumulated time of 24:19:57. Placing 16th in a field of 45! Who was in that team? Bob Granger, Paul Canham, Tony Burdett, Nick Palmer, Steve Gray, David Daniels, Bob Ratliffe, Richard Nash, Les Basham, Colin Pitts, Richard Fellingham, Roger Aldis, Chris Gladwell, Simon Brummitt, Andy Green, Les King, Alan Wells. There was also a ladies team entered that year. Some years Striders have entered two teams, subsequent best times are 2008—25:44:49, 2010—26:09:20.
It's a great team event to get involved in and is open to all abilities. Teams start times are staggered and based on an agrigate of team members estimated completion time for their assigned leg - so everyone has a chance of winning!
