We offer Tuesday and Thursday sessions for seniors, delivered by UKA qualified coaches.
The club proudly has several UK Athletics qualified coaches who coach on a rota basis so you will have regular contact with the same coaches.
The qualifications achieved by our coaches are supported and run through UK Athletics and England Athletics. This qualification combined with their experience of road running enable them to provide structured and quality training for the club.
If you have any questions regarding your training, fitness, nutrition or any other areas of running, then please feel free to speak with one of them during a club training night.
Chris Gladwell is the Coach co-ordinator.
Details and Instructions for Tuesday night Club Training
On Tuesdays we meet at Chilton Fields Sports Club, Chilton Way, Stowmarket IP14 1SZ
For Tuesday night training, we park at the Kingsfield Centre, at the top of Chilton Way. From there it’s a short warm-up jog to the club.
We meet at 6.45pm for club announcements and training starts at 7.00pm.
Our sessions are outdoors and continue throughout the winter come rain or shine. We either train on Chilton Fields or out on the roads around town.
Sessions include a dynamic warm-up, running drills for good form and technique, interval training and hill training.
The training sessions vary each week and the coaches will explain them in detail before the session. If there are any particular points to note the coaches will post information on TeamApp in advance.
The sessions are generally multi-paced, aerobic, interval-based and focus on speed and/or endurance. They are periodised depending on the time of year – in autumn and winter the efforts can be longer but a bit slower to build endurance for cross-country races and marathon training. Then in spring and summer the intervals can be shorter but a bit quicker to help build speed for the shorter summer races.
But all these sessions you can do at your own pace and you don’t have to do the whole session and being time-based intervals these are suitable for all.
The session will also include a cool down and static stretching post main session. The Tuesday sessions are split into groups based on your rough 5k time. This allows us to manage the numbers.
We currently have three training groups but on occassions combine the groups for “whole club” evenings.
- One group for anyone who can run 5k in under 22 minutes (The “Sub 22” group)
- One group for anyone who can run 5k in under 25 minutes (The “Sub 25” group)
- One group for anyone who runs 5k in over 25 minutes (The “25-plus” group)
The training in these groups will be tailored for runners able or aiming to do these 5k times. Before you begin training you will choose the group that best suits your ability or aspirations based on your actual (or aspirational) 5K time.
Don’t worry if you don’t know your 5k time, we’ll establish which training group you should be in following a quick chat. If you are attending a training session for the first time, please see a coach (usually in a yellow or high vis jacket and/or a jacket with ‘Coach’ written somewhere) and they’ll be able to help you.
Details and instructions for Thursday night club training
Our Thursday night sessions start at 7.30pm and last for about an hour. They are usually delivered by Chris Starmer, our most experienced coach and are known within the club as our “Starmer sessions“.
On Thursdays we also meet at Chilton Fields Sports Club and park at the Kingsfield Centre then make our way straight on to the field for training. We don’t have announcements etc on a Thursday. The sessions are “whole club” sessions, we don’t have separate pace groups but they will allow you to work at your own ability within the session framework that the coach provides.
Winter Cross-Country Training
During the winter months ( October through to March) we also hold a cross country training session on Sunday mornings in the beautiful grounds of Haughley Park. Meet to the right, approximately 200m inside the main gate – 9am start
